Statesmen Cannot Hang on in Five-Set Loss to Pride

Oskaloosa, Iowa—William Penn women’s volleyball team returned to the court after a brief four-day layoff to host Heart of America Athletic Conference foe, Clarke.

The Statesmen (11-18, 6-10 Heart) gave the Pride (23-7, 10-5 Heart) all they could handle in a back-and-forth five set affair but unfortunately were unable to seal the deal taking the 3-2 loss.

The navy and gold came out strong, winning the first set 25-15, using a strong defensive presence, holding the visiting Pride to a .000 hitting percentage. After surrendering an early run, William Penn found themselves down 10-9 before going on one of its own, scoring 12 of the next 14 points to help them win the set.

Unfortunately, the Statesmen offense found itself struggling in the following set and it led to a 25-20 loss before returning to take set three 25-23. The third set was the strongest for WPU offensively as they hit .341.

The Pride offensive attack came alive in sets four and five, proving to be too much for William Penn as they dropped the sets 25-13 and 15-7.

Overall, the Statesmen were outhit .171-.217.

Three hitters finished with double-digit kill totals, led by Corrin Lepper (So., Jefferson City, Mo., Exercise Science) with 16 at a .233 clip while Alicia Jaquez (Jr., Farmington, N.M., Biology) tallied 11 (.208) and Danielle Pendzinski (Sr., Winnebago, Ill., Elementary Education) put down 10.

Annalise Whitcomb (Jr., Humboldt, Kan., Accounting) handled a majority of the setting duties on the night producing 26 assists but Macy Bailey (Fr., Bondurant, Iowa, Business Management) also got into the action with 19 assists. Along with her assists, Whitcomb had 16 digs to collect the double-double.

Defensively, Cameryn Campbell (Jr., Jefferson City, Mo., Education) collected her fifth 30-dig game, tallying a total of 36 in this one. Casi Gacusana (Sr., Kea’au, Hawaii, Biology) also played well, finishing with 10 digs.
