Statesmen Blow Out Wildcats in First Game of 2020

Oskaloosa, Iowa— #5 William Penn hit the hardwood for the first time in 2020 to take on Heart of America Athletic Conference foe Baker.

The Statesmen (13-1, 7-1 Heart) extended a six-game win streak to seven with a 97-56 victory over the Wildcats (6-8, 4-5 Heart) after a month layoff for the holiday break. There was little rust as the navy and gold shot 47% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. The offense wasn’t the only thing clicking though as they dominated the visitors in nearly every other statistical category including having an edge in the round battle (54-32), bench scoring (48-34), 2nd chance points (12-6), and points off turnovers (12-10).

It didn’t take long for William Penn to put the game out of reach, opening up a 27-point lead at the 2:43 mark of the first half courtesy of a bucket from Kevion Blaylock (Jr., Houston, Texas, Information Technology). It was Blaylock’s Statesmen debut and he did not disappoint as he stuffed the stat sheet posting 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and a steal.

In the second half, WPU continued the onslaught as the lead ballooned to as many as 44 before the final touches were put on a 41-point victory. It was the third time this season that William Penn has won a game by at least 40 points.

Karmari Newman (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) led the squad in scoring with 19, including converting on 5-10 from three-point range. Dexter Hood (Sr., Tuscaloosa, Ala.) reached double-figures in the scoring department as he has done so in every game this season, finishing with 14. Ahmad Pender (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Wellness and Recreation) scored eight points while Brandon Faison (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.) had a good overall game with seven points, four boards, two assists, and a pair of steals. Chanze Cruesoe (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Business Management) led the facilitation duties as he collected seven assists in the game.

“We were really ready to play today after a long time off.” said Head Coach John Henry, “Kevion ‘KB’ Blaylock is a great addition to our team.”

Next Up: The Statesmen will hit the road and travel to Culver-Stockton on Wednesday with action beginning at 7:30 pm in Canton, Mo.
