Statesmen Battle but Fall to Evangel

Oskaloosa—William Penn Women’s Volleyball hosted Heart of America Athletic Conference action on Friday night inside the Penn Activity Center.

The Statesmen (6-9, 1-5 Heart) were defeated by the Crusader of Evangel (15-3, 3-1 Heart) in straight sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 27-25.

The ladies gave the visiting squad a tough match, pushing the Crusaders to multiple points where they had their backs against the wall but unfortunately couldn’t get over the hump and fell in all three sets.

WPU was outhit .200-.115 in the setback but showed some flashes on the defensive side, matching Evangels 71 digs.

Libby Zorn (Jr., Billings, Mont., History) led the Statesmen with eight kills, while Alicia Jaquez (Jr., Farmington, N.M., Biology) had another nice outing with seven kills.

Multiple setters got their chance to get into the action. Annalise Whitcomb (Jr., Humboldt, Kan.) produced a team-high 13 assists, while Sydney Roush (Jr., Osceola, Wis.) had eight of her own and Macy Bailey (Fr., Bondurant, Iowa, Business Management) chipped in four.

Defensively, four Statesmen tallied double-digit dig totals. Cameryn Campbell (Jr., Jefferson City, Mo.) dug 17 balls, Whitcomb added 14 to her night to give her a double-double, Casi Gacusana (Sr., Kea’au, Hawaii, Biology) also recorded 14 and Cecily Liphardt (Fr., Lincoln, Neb., Psychology) finished with 11.

Danielle Pendzinski (Sr., Winnebago, Ill., Elementary Education) played nicely along the net gathering a solo block and four block assists.

Next Up: William Penn will have a quick turnaround as they will take on Missouri Valley Saturday in the Penn Activity Center with the game scheduled to start at 2 pm.
