Simpson edges past Central men
INDIANOLA—Two players hit their career highs but the Central College men’s basketball team couldn’t find an answer for Simpson College in an 82-72 defeat Wednesday.
A 9-0 first-half run gave Central a 24-15 lead but the Storm quickly responded with a 10-0 run. Simpson held a 29-27 advantage after the opening half and maintained the lead the rest of the game with unanswered 5-point runs.
“It was a good game between evenly matched teams,” coach Mike Boschee said. “But suddenly they’re up by 10 in the second half and we couldn’t answer.”
Trying to spark the Dutch offensively, guard Demarco Turner (senior, Des Moines, East HS) tied his career high with 25 points and forward Chris Lehmann (junior, Champaign, Ill., Central HS) added a career-high 14 points.
Central (6-7, 2-3 Iowa Conference) outrebounded the Storm 37-32 but committed 17 turnovers compared to Simpson’s 11.
“We struggled with our assist to turnover ratio and gave Simpson (6-8, 3-2 Iowa Conference) more opportunities,” Boschee said.
Forwards James Chapline (senior, Ogden) and Jack Bruns (junior, Story City, Roland-Story HS) each had 7 rebounds.
The Dutch host Cornell College in a women’s-men’s doubleheader Saturday. The women’s game begins at 4 p.m. while the men tip off at 6 p.m. The Rams (6-9 overall, 1-5 conference) enter the matchup after a 70-55 loss to Luther College Wednesday.
“We’re a work in progress,” Boschee said. “We’ll find our way doing things the right way and striving to get better.”
Both games will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1). The broadcast can be accessed through www.central.edu/athletics, along with a video webcast and live stats.
