PELLA — A rough shooting night for the Central College women’s basketball team led to a 69-53 defeat to Coe College Saturday at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium in Pella.

Central (7-8 overall, 2-4 Iowa Conference) shot just 31.6 percent from the field, seven percent lower than its season average (39.1) and shot just 17.6 percent from beyond the arc, down from its season average of 34.1.

“Coe did a really good job defensively,” said coach Joe Steinkamp. “We went 3-of-17 from three and they did a good job of pressuring us and not letting us get clean looks in the second half.”

Senior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) had 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals to lead the Dutch. Fellow forward Kendall Brown (sophomore, Moravia) added 13 points and four rebounds.

“It was nice to get Kendall going there at the end,” said Steinkamp. “We were able to get some good looks in the post.”

The Dutch leading scorers Emily Dine (senior, Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) and guard Jessica Helton (senior, Nevada) were held to just seven and four points, respectively. Dine leads the team with 16.1 points per game while Helton is second with 11.2.

The Kohawks (6-9 overall, 3-3 Iowa Conference) won the rebounding battle 40-31 but had 18 turnovers compared to the Dutch 13.

Central heads to Dubuque Monday evening for a women’s-men’s doubleheader against Loras College with the women beginning at 6 p.m. Loras enters the contest 10-6 overall and 2-5 in the Iowa Conference after a 76-73 road victory over Buena Vista University Saturday.
