Shirley Stout, 91, of Oskaloosa died Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab. Center in Oskaloosa. She was born April 1, 1926, in Lyons, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur and Clara Krueger Benke.

Shirley graduated from Morton High School in Chicago, Illinois, with the class of 1944. Following high school, she furthered her education by taking some clerical classes.

Early on Shirley worked at Morton High School. In 1948, her family moved to Oskaloosa and owned and operated Shady Lodge. She worked at Shady Lodge in Oskaloosa with her family until she was married. On January 15, 1949, she was united in marriage to Russel L. Stout, Sr. in Oskaloosa.

Following their marriage, Shirley stayed home to care for her family and home. When her mother died, she went back to work and helped her father with the family business. She also sold Watkins Products and quilts that she made.

Shirley was a very active volunteer with organizations that she held close to her heart. She was a very active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa and was involved with the Ladies Guild. She was also active with the American Legion Auxiliary and served as president. The Republican Party and Mahaska County Politics also benefitted from Shirley’s volunteerism. She served as the head of the State Republicans Women’s group in 1976, that appointment brought the honor of being a delegate at the 1976 Republican Convention in Kansas City. She also worked the polling spots in Mahaska County for every election she was able.

Shirley enjoyed volunteering at Share, bowling, and playing Yahtzee. She had also been a member of the Willing Workers ladies group at one time. Most of all she delighted in spending time with her family.

She is survived by her four children, Cheryl (& Bucky) Ward of Louisiana, Missouri, Roxanne Stout of Oskaloosa, Rochelle Bethune of Oskaloosa, and Jay (& Sharon) Stout of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; a daughter in law, Mary Stout of Oskaloosa; five grandchildren: Cary and Brittany Bethune and Jenny (& Mike) Harwood, Ryan and Caleb Stout; and a special niece, Candy Smith of Mediapolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband Russell, Sr.; a son, Russell “Rusty” Stout, Jr.; a grandson, Jeremy Bethune; and a sister Bernice Shrimpton.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. John Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Samuel Beltz officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Monday after 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Monday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church or Alzheimer’s Association.
