Shirle J. Huth, 66, of Grinnell died November 9, 2010, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 15, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Kathy Roys officiating. Music will be provided by Cheryl Irland, organist and St. John’s Celebration Singers. Pallbearers will be Mike Burrell, Mike Hammond, Bob and Brad Hertko, and Bob and Rueben Ross. Honorary bearers will be Gary Cook, Bob Falck, Howard McDonough, and Cameron White. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 2:00 to 6:00 Sunday afternoon. Shirle was born July 6, 1944, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Chuck and Barbara Savage White. She was a 1962 graduate of Osceola High School.Following her education, she began working for GTE in Osceola as a phone operator and moved to a supervisor position in the Grinnell office in 1983, where she was instrumental in helping start a life-line through the phone company to assist the sick and elderly. She retired from GTE in 1999 and then began working as an admissions clerk at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. She was employed with the hospital until August 31, 2010.
On January 6, 1996, she was united in marriage to David Huth, in Cedar Rapids.
Shirle enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her granddaughter’s sporting events including soccer, softball, basketball, and volleyball. She was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears. She enjoyed her cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean and loved sharing her time together with David. They were best friends! She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and active with the Celebration Singers which she helped form. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, LWML, Iowa Independent Telephone Pioneers, American Business Women, and was honored as Grinnell Women of the year. She was a coordinator of the Iowa State Fair Parade for 10 years and a volunteer with the Special Olympics for over 20 years where she helped coordinate the Special Olympics in Iowa City. She was a Hospice volunteer as a home-sitter and enjoyed participating with the Grinnell Community Theatre in many productions.
Survivors include her husband, David of Grinnell; her mother, Barbara White of West Des Moines; three children, Nikki (Tony) Carroll of Ankeny, Jerry (Nicky) Cline of Cedar Rapids and Mike Cline of Cincinnati, Ohio; two step-sons, Shawn Huth of West Des Moines and Eric Huth of Janesville, Wisconsin; one sister, Vicki (Ed) Hertko of West Des Moines; one brother, Chris (Kim) White of St. Louis, Missouri; and two granddaughters, MacKenzie and Morgan Carroll of Ankeny. She was preceded in death by her father, Chuck White; two sisters, Debbie Ross and Becky White; and her first husband, Dan Cline.
