Seventh Inning Errors Lift Bears Past NM

NEW SHARON – North Mahaska battled with BGM for six innings Friday, but the visiting Bears took advantage of walks and errors to score a 5-3 South Iowa Cedar League victory. North Mahaska had its chances stranding 11 batters on base.

A one-out single by Beau Burns set up BGM’s first score. He moved around the bases and scored on Cale Coburn’s fielder’s choice.

North Mahaska had trouble with BGM hurler Jackson Buller who struck out the first four Warhawks he faced and struck out nine in his 4 1/3 innings of work.

Jack Kelderman’s lead-off single in the bottom of the fourth inning set up the Warhawks. Ryan Groom walked and with two out Hunter Wernli reached on an error and Kelderman and Groom scampered home to give NM a 2-1 lead.

Dominic Coleman ripped a one-out single and Mason Maschmann earned a two-out walk. Another Warhawk error allowed two runs to score and give the Bears the 3-2 advantage. Senior Ryan Andersen ripped a double and Kelderman walked to chase Buller from the game. A fielder’s choice allowed Andersen to score and knot the game.

Both teams had opportunities in the sixth but was unable to score. Two walks and a pair of errors allowed the Bears to jump ahead 5-3. North Mahaska received a hit from Jaxon Vander Veer but could not score the run.

Junior Kelderman went six innings allowing three runs on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Senior Nate Sampson went 2/3 innings giving up two runs on two walks. Senior Carson Doak through the final out in the top of the seventh facing one batter.

Andersen, Kelderman and Vander Veer were responsible for NM’s three hits.

Coleman and Burns each hit singles for BGM. Buller struck out nine, walked five and gave up two hits. Coburn gave up one hit.

North Mahaska plays at the Moravia round robin on Saturday then goes to Colfax-Mingo Monday. Next Thursday NM will travel to East Marshall.
