The William Penn men’s soccer team battled against Missouri Valley, but fell just short in a 2-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss Saturday.

The Statesmen (7-9-2, 4-7-1 Heart), who entered with a chance to earn a postseason tournament game at home, were outshot just 13-11 and were tied 0-0 at intermission.

The Vikings (11-5-2, 7-3-2 Heart) tallied the first goal on Senior Night, doing so at the 62:38 juncture.

Facundo Benitez (Sr., Buenos Aires, Argentina, Business Management), one of the eight seniors recognized prior to the contest, then produced the equalizer, launching a long shot past the opposing keeper in the 79th minute to knot up the contest.

Unfortunately, the visitors had a quick response less than three minutes later and held on for the win.

Nenad Markovic (So., Belgrade, Serbia) led WPU with six shots, while Caleb Pipes-Goulsbra (Jr., Lincoln, England, Exercise Science) produced two saves.

The Statesmen will now enter the Heart Tournament as the #9 seed, traveling to Canton, Mo. Wednesday to take on #8 seed Culver-Stockton at 6 p.m. in the play-in round. C-SC defeated WPU 3-2 in double overtime on October 12 in Oskaloosa.

“We can be proud of how we played against a very strong opponent tonight,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We unfortunately did not take the chances we produced in critical moments. We look forward to the playoffs on Wednesday and facing Culver-Stockton again. The team is playing really well at the moment and I believe we can make a real run in the playoffs.”
