Oskaloosa, Iowa – The contest to become Iowa’s next governor is in full swing, and several candidates have made their way to Mahaska County and Oskaloosa over the past two weeks.

Nate Boulton and Fred Hubbell are two of those who made stops at a local coffee shop and spoke with constituents about their ideas if elected.

Boulton is a lawyer and serves in the Iowa Senate for the 16th District.

Hubbell is an Iowa businessman, who also served as an interim director for the Iowa Department of Economic Development under Governor Chet Culver.

Both are Democrats seeking to upset Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds in next year’s election. They are being challenged by a host of other Democrats, namely Andy McGuire, the former chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, and John Norris, the former chief of staff to Governor Tom Vilsack.

Reynolds also has challengers from within her party. Ron Corbett, the mayor of Cedar Rapids, and Steven Ray, Mayor Pro-Tem of Boone, have also indicated their desire to be the next governor.

At his stop in Oskaloosa on Saturday, Hubbell said that he brings a combination of business experience with large companies across Iowa and his experience working in state government to the table. “I have a lot of public-private experience leading efforts all across our state.”

“I think that’s what we need now. We have a serious budget challenge,” added Hubbell, who also touched on education and health care within the state.

Last Saturday, Nate Boulton also visited Oskaloosa, where he addressed the state’s budget, saying that a competitive economic program needs to be in place, and that tax credits be appropriately used versus “coupon” tax credits for large companies, like Apple, that don’t require those types of incentives to move to the state.

Both candidates believe that Governor Kim Reynolds is responsible for the current state budget. Both agree that then Lt. Governor Reynolds was shoulder to shoulder with then Governor Branstad as those decisions were made.

Iowa will select its next governor in November of 2018.
