SEA CHANTERS PRESENT FREE CHORAL CONCERT AT GEORGE DAILY AUDITORIUM
Official Chorus of the U.S. Navy - The Sea Chanters
OSKALOOSA, IA — Oskaloosa is no stranger to military music groups, from the jazz sensation The Commodores last season, all the way back to the fall of 2000 when a military band first performed for the community. This year, the George Daily Auditorium presents the official chorus of the U.S. Navy, The Sea Chanters. On Thursday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m., The Sea Chanters will perform a free concert at the GDCA consisting of a variety of music, from patriotic selections to Broadway hits, traditional nautical chanteys to classical and contemporary selections
This 20 voice chorus is accompanied by a three piece rhythm section, including a piano, bass and drums. They have appeared with the National Symphony and Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and perform often at the White House, the vice president’s house and for dignitaries. They are frequently found at our nation’s most important events, playing during Inauguration Day 2009, memorials, after the events of 9/11 and many more. Renowned composers Michael McCarthy, Roger Bourland, William MacDuff and Lloyd Pfautsch have created music specifically for the Sea Chanters.
Of the Sea Chanters, New York newspaper The Daily Gazette says, “This is a virtuoso vocal group and their program was fast-paced and varied, every note of the way. Sea Chanter members can handle close, tricky harmonies when singing as a group and shine in the spotlight as solo singers.”
The group began in 1956 when Lt. Harold Fultz organized a group from the Navy School of Music to sing at the State of the Nation dinner. Their success led them to a permanent position with the United States Navy Band. The Sea Chanters are now under the direction of Senior Chief Musician Georgina L. Todd, who joined the Navy Band in 1993.
