School Board Thanks Retirees For Their Service

Bruce McLellan, Middle and High School Orchestra Instructor was recognized for his 29 years of service to the Oskaloosa School District.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa School Board met in regular session on Tuesday, May 14, 2019.

The Board held a small reception for all retiring teachers from the district and afterward awarded small plaques in appreciation of their service.

Marian Raum, Instructional Coach at the Oskaloosa Middle School, Bruce McLellan, Middle and High School Orchestra Instructor, Ken Slaughter, Bus Driver, all received recognition for their service to the district.

Contracts were extended to Christopher Copeland for High School Band, Haley Van Der Pol as OES School Counselor, Sarah McGlothlen filling the OES Head Principal, and Makenzie Kauffman as Head Girls Swim Coach, and Bart Elliot as Middle School PE Teacher.

The board accepted the resignation of Sandi Fribley from the OMS Careers/FCS position. The board also accepted the resignation of Sandi Fribley from her position as the Middle School Consumer Science teacher, and also the resignation of Laura Brehm who is listed as the High School French teacher.

The probationary contract of Amy Bidwell will be terminated at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

The Board approved an extension of the Food Service Director Contract with Pella Community School District. Oskaloosa Superintendent wrote to the board saying, “Connie Boldt seems to be doing well for us and she is meeting our primary goal of improving the financial situation. While we would ultimately like to have our own Director, we feel continuing this contract is still in our best interests and keeps our costs low.”

The board approved the contract extension for the next school year.

The board approved a contract extension with Twin Cedars for sharing both transportation and maintenance service. “This arrangement has been working well, so we are requesting a three-year agreement that could be stopped after any year,” said Wright in the board packet.

The contract was extended.

A motion was made to extend the contract with Eddyville CSD for human resource management services with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. In her notes to the board, Superintendent Paula Wright said, “This arrangement has been working well, so we are requesting a three-year agreement that could be stopped after any year.”

The board agreed and approved the three-year contract extension.

The board considered the purchase of a large commercial mower to save the time and wear of mowing larger open areas. The board agreed and approved the purchase of the large mower to reduce the labor costs for the district.

The board approved the final reading of the 400 series of policy. No requests were made for changes to the policy, and after the vote, the policy came into force.

The board then considered policies 500-503. This was the first reading of the policy. Some changes were recommended for the next reading of the policy changes.

The board then went into closed session to review the job performance of personnel in the district.
