Oskaloosa, Iowa- The period to file nomination papers to run for Oskaloosa School Board has arrived. Filing takes place at each respective School District Administrative Office. The final date to file nomination papers is August 4th at 5 p.m. Candidates can access nomination papers by going to their School Administration Office or by going to the Secretary of State’s Website at www.sos.state.ia.us/elections/candidates and click on “School Elections” and then “School Board Nomination Petition.”

In Oskaloosa, two candidates filed to run on Monday. Charlie Comfort, 18, filed to run for Director District four. District 3 incumbent, Laurie Palmer, filed to run for re-election.

I spoke with Comfort and asked him what drew him to run for office, and why the school board was his choice. “I chose to run after a couple of months of thoughts and discussions with different people. I attended Osky Schools from Kindergarten until I graduated this May. I have seen first hand the pros and cons of our schools and I feel that as a recent graduate I can help bring solutions to the board on how to fix some of the problems in the school system.”

The number of persons to be elected in each district and the number of signatures to get on the ballot in each district is as follows: Fremont Community District- two at-large to be elected. 10 signatures to get on the ballot. North Mahaska Community School District- one to be elected for Director Districts 1,2, and 3. 10 Signatures need to get on the ballot. Oskaloosa Community School District- one to be elected for Director Districts 1,3,4, and 6. 50 Signatures required to get on the ballot.
