Sunny Netland helped fill boxes for the Rotary Food Basket program on Friday afternoon.

On Friday, Oskaloosa Middle School students along with volunteers from the Oskaloosa Rotary joined together to help prepare Christmas dinner packages for those less fortunate in our community.

Later in the afternoon, members of the Board of Realtors helped to fill those boxes that would be distributed the next day to help 375 families have a special Christmas dinner.

In total, approximately 70 volunteers help to make the distribution possible.

The Rotary collects donations earlier in the year to help offset the cost of the food baskets.

Eric Christensen and Eddie Pierson were co-chairs of the food basket project this year. The first year for both of them to be heading up the project.

Christensen said he was happy to take on the responsibility of the project, “it’s a great program for the community.”

“We’ve had a lot of help from some people with some history in the program, so we were able to figure out how things were set up and how things kind of work,” added Christensen.

The numbers for this year are down from previous years, but Christensen hopes that is a sign of an improving economy in the area.
