Rosemarie “Rosie” Denney, 88, of Oskaloosa died Friday, October 26, 2018, at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab in Oskaloosa. She was born March 3, 1930, the daughter of John and Mary Veronica (Monich) Ernst, in a farm home near Humboldt, Iowa.

Rosemarie attended Columbkille School in Varnia, Iowa, through the third grade. Her family then moved to Mahaska County and she attended Elm Grove Country School. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1947. Following graduation, she worked at J.H. Wake Feed Mill for five and a half years.

On February 12, 1953, Rosemarie married Daryl Denney at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa.

Following their marriage, they moved to a farm north of Rose Hill. Rosemarie worked alongside her husband Daryl on the farm in addition to caring for her family and home. She was also active in many neighborhood clubs for many years.

In 1992, they retired and moved into Oskaloosa. Daryl died February 24, 2003, shortly after their 50-year wedding anniversary.

Rosemarie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa where she had been active in the choir when she was younger. She enjoyed sewing, reading and listening to music.

Her family includes her son in law, Joel Illian; two grandchildren, Amber Illian and John Illian; two great grandchildren, Nathaniel Illian and Ivy Jade Illian; cousins, Lawrence Mason, Mary Elizabeth (& Gene) Moniz, and Tim (& Linda) Monich.

In addition to her husband Daryl, Rosemarie was preceded in death by her son, John Denney; a daughter, Maxine Illian; a half-brother, Roy Ernst; and half-sisters, Beata Hockel and Marjorie Knutson.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Tom Spiegel officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
The Rosary will be prayed on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
