Rollin’ Oldies Attracts Several New Faces

New cars and lots of smiling faces made up Saturday’s Rollin’ Oldies car show on the square in Oskaloosa.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – For nearly three decades, the Rollin’ Oldies Car Club has hosted a car show on the square in Oskaloosa the last weekend of July.

The sound of big blocks and whine of superchargers can be found shaking the pavement at your local car shows, just like the annual Rollin’ Oldies show.

Jerry Slobe was out among the old classics and new classics, making his selection for his favorites. “I just like to see all the different cars and how far each has taken it, from when they got it to where it is now.”

Motors, options and the technology that car manufacturers “are now putting into these cars for street machines is unbelievable,” added Slobe.

Slobe, who spent a lifetime of hauling away cars after they had been demolished in an accident, enjoys the ones that survived daily driving.

Slobe expressed there were several nice cars at the show that he’d not seen before. “So this is a good day.”

When judging, it’s hard to set aside those preferences, and Slobe will tell you, “I’m Mopar at heart, but I have a Chevy too. I still like the Chargers and the Challengers and the GTX’s and the Road Runners and the ‘Cuda’s. I like all those cars.”

Detroit has found a welcoming buyer in modern muscle cars, and Slobe says that Dodge is “really going out of their way to make performance cars.”

At the other end of the street sat an Oskaloosa Police Department squad car, with officer Brandon Blanchard.

Blanchard wasn’t writing tickets. Instead, he was taking the opportunity to meet and chat with some of Oskaloosa’s youngest residents.

Blanchard was offering temporary tattoo’s and, “hanging out and interacting with the kids on a beautiful Saturday.”

Blanchard was enjoying the moments, saying, “We don’t get this opportunity as much as we would like.”

Blanchard hadn’t had a chance to look over the cars displayed at the show. Law enforcement was given the opportunity to make a pick.

Although not predetermined to a certain type of car, Blanchard said he leans towards Chevy’s. “It’s something I’d probably be more interested in personally.”
