Rodney Lee Smith,Sr. 61, of rural Oskaloosa and formerly of Bussey died Friday, June 27, 2014, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. He was born Tuesday, October 14, 1952, in Oskaloosa, the son of Elmer Junior and Mary Greeno Smith.

Rod graduated from Twin Cedars High School with the class of 1970. On June 26, 1971, Rodney was united in marriage to Connie Courtney. To this union two children, Heather and Rod, were born. They later divorced.

Following graduation, Rod worked at Clow Valve in Oskaloosa until his enlistment in the Army. Following his discharge, Rod came home and worked at the VA Hospital in Knoxville and farmed. He later worked various construction jobs while farming.

Rod enjoyed fishing, being at the river with his friends and telling stories around a campfire. He loved farming. Rod was a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by, his daughter: Heather (& Jeremy) Williams of Bussey; his son: Rod (& Charity) Smith, Jr. of Knoxville; his mother: Mary Smith of Oskaloosa; 10 grandchildren: Cassie, Jake, Dylon, Shyann, Austin, Hannah, Kyler, Cooper, Paisley and Piper; a great granddaughter: Taylyn; a brother: Stephen (& Dixie) Smith of New Sharon; a sister, Rebecca (& John) Kelsey of Bussey; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Dwayne Poe officiating.
Burial will be in Weldon Cemetery southwest of Oskaloosa.
Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will begin Monday after 1:00 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Monday from 6 – 8 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Weldon Cemetery.
