Robert Ross Stevens, 88, of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 following a bravely fought illness. Robert, affectionately known as “Bob,” or “Uncle Bob” to his family, was born June 5, 1930, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to his parents, Ross and Grace (Lewis) Stevens. He was raised on his parents’ farm with a large family of siblings.

Following his graduation from high school, Robert enlisted in the Army and was shipped to the Hawaiian Islands where he was one of only a few to be selected to attend and become trained as an Army mechanic. Robert served his country honorably during the Korean War by running the motorpool closest to the front line.

Robert was Honorably Discharged from the Army and joined two of his older siblings, settling on the East Coast in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Robert attended the University of Maryland and earned an Associate’s Degree in business.

For over 50 years, Robert owned four gas stations in Washington D.C. and ran a Triple A Towing Contract. He retired in 1984 and spent many years thereafter providing care for others and volunteering countless hours at local nursing homes.

Robert was a member of the American Legion and the Silver Spring VFW.

Robert is survived by his nieces: Carolyn Johnson, LeAnn Stevens, Debbie Stevens, Maureen Raynor, Teresa Lyman, Michele Brashear, Kathleen Brunner, Barbara Bowman, Patty Earle, and Anne Garman; and his nephews: Thomas McCabe, Michael McCabe, Patrick McCabe, Paul Stevens, Rick Stevens, John Stevens, Dan Stevens and James Morgan. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marjorie Stevens; and brother-in-law, James Morgan.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ross and Grace (Lewis) Stevens; his sisters: Dorothy Couts, Isabel McCabe, and Phyllis Jeanne Morgan; his brothers: Roy Stevens, James Stevens, and Jerry Stevens; a niece, Sharon Stevens; and two nephews, Dennis Couts and Larry Stevens.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Robert Goodrich officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Graveside military honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will be on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until service time at 11.
Memorials may be made to the American Legion or to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
