Richard “Dick” Arendt, 86 of Montezuma passed away Monday morning, October 22, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Richard Leroy Arendt, the son of Melvin and Dolores (Farmer) Arendt, was born on October 19, 1932 in Delta, Iowa.

Dick graduated from Montezuma High School in 1951. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Drake University in 1954.

On September 26, 1954, Dick was united in marriage to Leta Close at the Marshalltown Christian Church. To this union three sons were born, David, William and Michael.

Dick began his banking career at the Central National Bank in Des Moines before joining his father in 1955 at the Peoples Savings Bank in Montezuma. He was involved in banking and insurance sales for the bank for a number of years having the opportunity for his sons to join him at the bank in 2001.

Family was very important to Dick and he absolutely enjoyed spending time with them. When his son, Mike, was stationed in Turkey while in the service, Dick and Lea had the opportunity to have their grandchildren live with them for a few years.

Dick was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed supporting the Braves and Bravettes, especially when his grandchildren and great grandchildren were playing. They looked forward to spending the winter months in Palm Desert, California and traveling, which included special trips to Europe, New Zealand and Africa. Dick also enjoyed watching all sports, trips to Prairie Meadows to watch horse racing, golfing and playing bridge.

Dick was a faithful member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, Montezuma Jaycee’s, the Montezuma Country Club and the Montezuma Lion’s Club where he received the highest award, the Warren Coleman Award.

Dick’s legacy will be honored by his loving wife of 64 years, Lea Arendt of Montezuma; two sons: David Arendt of Montezuma and Michael (& Nicole) Arendt of Montezuma; two grandchildren: Michael (& Shannon) Arendt II of Montezuma and Heather (& Adam) Snook of Montezuma; six great grandchildren: Alisha Arendt, Gaige Arendt, Brayden Arendt, Hunter Van Dee, Chloe Snook, Emma Snook, and Nicole’s children, Colton and Katie. He is also survived by: his sister, Shirley (& Bill) Bolen; his brother, Jim (& Sally) Arendt of Sunset Beach, North Carolina; his sister-in-law, Mary (& Don) Rethman of San Antonio, Texas; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Dolores Arendt; a son, William Arendt; a brother, Melvin Arendt Jr.; and his parents-in-law, Richard and Katherine Close.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Friday, October 26, 2018 at the Montezuma United Methodist Church.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Thursday, October 25, 2018 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Montezuma Dollars for Scholars or the Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department.
