North Sioux City, S.D.–The Statesmen women’s golf team rallied after a poor opening 18 holes to tie a program record and finish high at the Lila Frommelt Classic hosted by Briar Cliff Friday and Saturday.

#17 William Penn placed second out of 16 teams with a two-day score of 632 (330-302) at the par-71 Two Rivers Golf Course. Morningside, the only team to defeat WPU in its first two events, did so again this week with a score of 625 (316-309).

The Statesmen struggled Friday, but put that all behind them Saturday as they tied a team 18-hole record at 302. It is the fourth time a WPU crew has posted a 302.

Maria Zorrilla of Morningside won the 99-player tournament at 148 (76-72), while Helene Larsen (Jr., Viborg, Denmark, Business Management) was her closest competition as she claimed silver at 154 (82-72). Her 72 is one stroke off the school record, which she tied last year.

Brittany Evans (So., Fernley, Nev., Business Management) and Elise Warne (Jr., Melbourne, Australia, Exercise Science) both tied for sixth at 159. Evans carded rounds of 82 and 77, while Warne signed off on an 83 and 76.

Megan Rhoads (Jr., Schertz, Texas, Psychology) was next for William Penn at 165 (88-77) to tie for 18th, while Alexis Guimaraes (So., San Ramon, Calif., Psychology) finished in a tie for 37th at 172 (83-89).

A pair of individuals also hit the links this weekend; Brooke Fletcher (Sr., Atlantic, Iowa, Business Management) tied Rhoads for 18th at 165 (86-79) and Sofie Lund (Jr., Herning, Denmark, Psychology) tied for 52nd at 177 (89-88).

“We unfortunately got behind after the first day again,” Head Coach Chris Pierson said. “We talked what we needed to do as a team and came back strong the second day and showed what we are capable of.”

“Helene played a great tournament and Elise and others stepped up big on the second day as well,” Pierson added.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Sunday to host Grinnell in a dual meet. Play will be contested at Harvest Point Golf Course.
