Raymond “Virgil” Curtis, 90, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014 at his home in Richland.

Virgil was born July 26, 1923 in Ollie, the son of George Leroy and Hannah Edith Chacey Curtis. He grew up in the Ollie Community, and graduated from Ollie High School.

On August 17, 1947, he was united in marriage to Doris Sipes at the Methodist Church in Lancaster, Missouri. He was a farmer for 50+ years, and a salesman for Knight Enterprises, after poor health forced him from farming. He has been a resident of Richland since 1982.

Virgil was a member of the Ollie United Methodist Church, Past Master of the Ollie Justice Lodge #230, a Past Worthy Patron of the Hedrick O.E.S. and a member of the Ollie Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Past member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem in Oskaloosa, member of American Legion Post #504, and a WWII Veteran. He also served on the previous Ollie Consolidated School Board, and Pekin Community School Board of Packwood, and the Ollie election board for a number of years. Virgil also served on the Richland City Council.

Virgil enjoyed camping, was an avid fisherman, woodworking, square dancing, playing Cribbage, Dominoes, photography, and being with his family. His greatest enjoyment was attending the grandchildren’s activities.

He is survived by four daughters and their families: Janice (Robert) Anderson of Wayland, Iowa; Elaine (Craig) Woosley of Bloomfield, Iowa; Cheryl and Edward Loring of Danville, Iowa and Linda O’Rourke of Ospry, Florida. Eight grandchildren: Emily Anderson of Eagle, Colorado, Kevin Anderson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, April and Sara Woosley both of Bloomfield, Iowa, Brandi Loring of Davenport, Iowa, Brandon Loring of Danville, Iowa, Julie O’Rourke of Parker, Colorado, and Joey O’Rourke of Flower Mound, Texas, and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris, and a daughter, Patrice Elaine.

Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Wednesday and will continue until 10:00 AM when Masonic Rites will be offered by Ollie Justice Lodge #230.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 22, at 10:30 AM at the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, Iowa, with the Rev. David Peterson officiating.
Burial will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Ottumwa with military honors provided by Richland American Legion Post #504.
Memorials may be made in his name to either First Responders of Richland, Hospice Compasses, or Prairie View United Methodist Church, Ollie, Iowa.
