PELLA — A fast start for the Central College volleyball team had Luther College on its heels but the Norse settled down to take the match 18-25, 25-13, 25-12, 25-12 Saturday.

After taking Iowa Conference champion Wartburg College to five sets Friday night, fatigue may have played a factor in Saturday’s decision.

“Luther played well and I don’t want to take anything away from them but I also think we showed a little bit of tiredness,” said coach Jeanne Czipri.

Sophomore middle hitter Hana Edgerton (Grundy Center) led Central with nine kills and four blocks.

Senior setter Regan Nelson (Pella) quarterbacked the offense with 31 assists.

Senior hitters Mollie Mason (Iowa City, West HS), Kylie Gerstein (Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) and Jenna Dille (Carlisle) had eight, six and four kills, respectively on Senior Day.

Prior to the match Central saluted its seven seniors Shelby Dash (Bethany, Ill., Okaw Valley HS), Dille, Keegan Flaherty (Burlington), Gerstein, Mason, Nelson and Ellie Stoakes (Gladbrook, Gladbrook-Reinbeck HS).

“They are such a classy group of athletes,” said Czipri. “They are phenomenal young women and I hope I get to coach more women like them.”

The Dutch have four matches remaining in the season and they travel to Bloomington, Ill. for a two-day tournament beginning Friday. Central opens tournament play with Lincoln Christian University (Ill.) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and follows with Wisconsin Lutheran College at 5:30 p.m. Westminster University (Mo.) awaits Central Saturday at noon and a match with tournament-host Illinois Wesleyan University is at 2 p.m.
