The Oskaloosa Civil Service Commission met this past week to hear an update on the process of hiring a new police chief.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – A meeting of the Oskaloosa Civil Service Commission this past week indicated that the process of hiring the city’s new police chief was down to 10 candidates.

The process of finding candidates is being spearheaded by Stephen Niebur with Moulder & Associates.

Niebur said there was a total of 70 applicants for the position, with 30 of those meeting the minimum qualifications for the position. Of those 30, the list was narrowed to the 10 applicants presented to the commission.

Preliminary background checks have been performed on the 10 candidates.

The 10 remaining applicants will be handed over to the city to work down to 5 remaining candidates. There are some local candiates for the position remaining on that list.

Those remaining 5 would be the ones that would be invited for interviews, which will lead to a top 2 or 3 remaining candidates, who will then go through further evaluations in the middle of May.

“I think your going to have a hard choice making a decision,” said Niebur of the crop of candidates for the position.
