Phyllis Nadine Stevens, 90, of Oskaloosa passed away June 22, 2014 at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Phyllis was born September 29, 1923 in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Robert and Caroline Cole.

Phyllis graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1941. She was united in marriage to Walter Leroy Stevens on December 24, 1941 at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. Following their marriage they settled at the Stevens’ Family Farm and spent the next 35 years on the farm. Together they welcomed five children into their family: Sharon, Richard, John, Dan and Deborah. Phyllis and her husband Roy Stevens owned and operated Binns & Stevens Explosives, which still carries the name.

Phyllis will be remembered as our teacher. Her sense of humor, honesty, and strong work ethic lives on in each of us. Phyllis loved family gatherings and preparing meals and desserts. Family was the center of her world. She had a flair for interior design and was a master gardener. She enjoyed playing the piano, dancing, music, cards, board games, gardening, sports, and travel.

Phyllis is survived by her children: Rick Stevens (Connie) of Oskaloosa, John (Sandy) Stevens of Grundy Center, Dan Stevens of Oskaloosa, and Debbie Stevens of Oskaloosa; 16 grandchildren: Ward Wilkin, Dirk Wilkin, Josh Farrell, Stacey Bone, Heather Stevens- Vandenberg, Whitney Schneider, Abby Stevens, Grant Stevens, Haley Swanson, Blair Stevens, Ross Stevens, Zach Flaherty, Joe Flaherty, Dustin Flaherty, Ashley Schultz and Jake Osborn; plus 23 beautiful great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law: Robert Stevens of Silver Springs, Maryland and James Morgan of Rockville, Maryland.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Sharon Farrell; great granddaughter Annie Schultz; a sister Louise Cole; and two brothers: Don and Robert Cole.

Visitation will begin Friday, June 27, 2014, after 9:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be held Saturday June 28, 2014, at 1:00 pm at Bates Funeral Chapel.
Burial is at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice Serenity House at 630 North 12th Street in Oskaloosa, IA.
