Phyllis DeCook, 68, of Oskaloosa died at her home in Oskaloosa. She was born April 24, 1946, in Oskaloosa the daughter of Phillip and Mary Edwards Sheeley.

Phyllis graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1964.

Following graduation Phyllis went to work at Younkers in Des Moines. She later went to work at J.C. Penney’s retiring from there in 2003, after 20 years.

In retirement she worked at Maple Ridge in Oskaloosa as an aide. For the last two years she has worked in the kitchen at the Oskaloosa Middle School. She also took care of many elderly people in their homes.

Phyllis was an active member of the Jubilee Family Church in Oskaloosa. She delighted in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed working with the young children and the elderly.

Her family includes her two sons and their wives: Darin and Lisa Grimm of Oskaloosa and Erin and Lori Montgomery of Ottumwa; four grandchildren: Johnathan Bartholomew, Erin Montgomery, Kamy Montgomery and Anita Montgomery; a brother: Frank Sheeley of Phoenix, Arizona; a niece, that was like a daughter, and her family: Belinda McCreight (Roger Baumert) and her children: Mendy McCreight, Misty Kellogg, Mark McCreight and Melanie McCreight.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Larry Sheeley.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Bill Tvedt officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Jubilee Family Church Benevolent Fund.
