Penn Students Set To Enjoy ‘Pennstock’

Pennstock Chairman Roy Aguillon shows off some of the items students will receive, like this light up mug

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The college academic year is coming to a close, and finals are staring down the students from William Penn next week.

But before the stress of finals hits, the tradition at Penn has been to hold ‘Pennstock’ the Friday before finals. So, tonight at the PAC, starting at 8 p.m. the students will have an opportunity to socialize and unwind one more time before the stressful week, and then packing up after graduation, or going home for the summer.

The William Penn Student Government Association commissioned “the committee is made up of any student who wanted to assist in organizing the event.”

The festivities are non-alcoholic in nature, and some people might question why students would want to participate. Organizers believe that “tradition should be the strongest draw for students.”

Having been a fixture for over a decade now at William Penn, the evening will feature a number of games, drawings and activities that “are sure to offer students a great night.” During the night, every 10 minutes they will be drawing names to win $100. And at the end of the night, they will be giving away an Amazon Kindle, a ’42 flat screen T.V., and 3 iPads including a new iPad 3.

The food will follow the theme of ‘Pennstock’ and will serve Latino food. “Omaira’s famous chicken rice will be available along with a bottomless nacho bowl and an endless fruit spread.” The theme for this year is ‘Fiesta’, and was suggested by ‘Pennstock’ Chairman Roy Aguillon, who has first hand knowledge of the event from his home in San Antonio.

The evening will feature a DJ that has been hired to play contemporary music, and a hired photographer to capture images to share later, but also two large screens on the dance floor. The photos will be posted online the next day so that students can download the images free-of-charge.

If your tired from dancing, you can also enjoy a chili pepper eat-off to water pong. All the games offer students the opportunity to win prizes or additional name slips to enter into the various drawings.

‘Pennstock’ is paid for by the students and is factored into the tuition cost. So if your hoping to join the students in an evening of fun, you will be disappointed to find out that it is only for students.

Preparation for ‘Pennstock’ started just 5 days after returning from Christmas break, and so far, the committee has put in a combined 512 hours into organizing the event. On top of that, having many volunteers helps to ensure that the event runs smoothly. Nearly two dozen faculty and staff members will be sacrificing their evening to help. The William Penn University Greek Council has volunteered to help with the clean-up after the celebration.
