Beacon, Iowa – Emergency personnel responded to a call for help at 5:45pm Friday afternoon, just west of Oskaloosa along Indian Way, which connects Beacon with Oskaloosa.

According to a report by the Iowa State Patrol, a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by 86 year old Clyde Van Klaveren of Oskaloosa was driving eastbound on Indian Way in a non-lighted section of the roadway. There was a pedestrian walking eastbound on the shoulder of Indian Way, and a second pedestrian, wearing dark clothing and using his cell phone, was walking eastbound on Indian Way on the roadway. The operator of the Chevrolet S-10 did not see the pedestrian walking on the roadway, and the front of his pickup truck struck the pedestrian walking on the roadway. The pedestrian fell onto the shoulder as the operator of the Chevrolet S-10 steered to the right and came to a stop on the shoulder and edge of the roadway.

The Iowa State Patrol report says that Joshua Latcham was the pedestrian that was struck.

Latcham was air-lifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines for treatment.

The Iowa State Patrol lead the investigation. The Mahaska County Sheriffs Office, Oskaloosa Police Department, Oskaloosa Fire Department, Mahaska Health Partnership Emergency Services and 911 Dispatchers all assisted with the call.

A Go Fund me page has been set up by the family of Latcham to help cover funeral expenses. – HERE – https://www.gofundme.com/9pjezr53
