Pat Watts, 80, of Montezuma passed away suddenly Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at her home in Montezuma. Patricia Mae Watts, the daughter of H. Darrell and Esther (Lentz) Shanklin, was born on April 6, 1938 in Marion, Iowa.

Pat was a 1956 graduate of Marion High School. She graduated from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls in 1960 receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

After receiving her degree, Pat taught Physical Education in Montezuma from 1960 to 1964.

On June 23, 1963, Pat was united in marriage to Dale Watts at the Montezuma United Methodist Church. To this union two sons were born, Mark and Brian.

When her youngest son, Brian, began school, Pat went back to work in the Montezuma School elementary office and also subbed until retiring in 1997. During that time, Dale and Pat owned and operated Star Lanes Bowling Alley in Montezuma where she ran the snack bar and was known for her donuts and cookie dough. Every morning before going to work at the school, Pat would go into the bowling alley getting the donuts ready.

Pat taught swimming lessons during the summer for several years and enjoyed water aerobics. Dale and Pat enjoyed traveling, having the opportunity to travel to Europe twice, visiting all 50 states, wintering in Texas the past 11 years and taking a family vacation on a Disney Cruise twice. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and attending all of their activities. Pat took pride in her garden and enjoyed sharing its produce with neighbors and friends.

Pat was a very faithful member of the Montezuma United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Mother’s Club, the Montezuma Community Club and she enjoyed her monthly retired teacher’s group luncheons.

Her legacy will be honored by her husband of 55 years, Dale Watts of Montezuma; two sons, Mark (& Lisa) Watts of New Sharon and Brian Watts of Montezuma; five grandchildren: Megan (& Roman) Meyers, Katie (& Colton) Molyneux, Tressa Watts, Nick Watts and Samuel Watts; her mother, Esther Shanklin of Montezuma; three siblings: Darlene (& Von) Elbert of Cedar Rapids, Carol (& Jimmy) Shelbourn of Lincoln, NE and Bill (& Sue) Shanklin of Cedar Rapids; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Pat was preceded in death by her father, H. Darrell Shanklin.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Monday, November 5, 2018 at the Montezuma United Methodist Church.
Burial will be held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Sunday, November 4, 2018 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Montezuma Volunteer Fire Department or for Pat’s love of children, you may bring to the funeral home hats, gloves or coats for children in need.
