Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa girls varsity basketball team was in action this past Tuesday night when they hosted Centerville.

Oskaloosa head coach Jacie White spoke with Oskaloosa News’s Jamie Brockman after the game.

White said that she saw some really good things from her team, but struggled with some of the first game nerves, something Centerville was already over since Oskaloosa was their second game of the young season.

White said her team struggled during some of the late game situations that found the Indians in a position to snap their 40 game losing streak. “We weren’t in a lot of close games, so there was just a lot of inexperience for a lot of girls on the floor,”

Turnovers plagued the Indians, and White says “a lot of them are just unforced turnovers, just some of the girls not wanting the ball in their hands and just being confident offensively. We’ve got some of our go to’s in Marleigh and Macie, who were taking some good shots, but we’ve got to have a few other girls step up and score to open up some offense for them.”

White added that the Indians struggled to get the ball inside, which in turn limited the offense from the perimeter.

“We had some good looks. Moved the ball alright. Not a bad night when we put up 47 points,” added White. During their last season, the Indians averaged 26 points per game, with 8 different Indians putting themselves into the scoring column.

“Just having girls that are willing to take shots, and tonight it came from girls you wouldn’t typically expect, so that was cool to see. Kaylee Johnson really stepped up and hit some shots for us,” said White. “I thought she played really well coming off the bench, bringing us a spark.”

“Amanda Fay was just a workhorse, and doing some stuff inside for us and cleaning up some rebounds,” she added. “I thought we had some girls on the bench stepping up and doing some things for us offensively and defensively.”

In the end, the Centerville Big Reds beat the Indians 57-47, as the Indians continue the search for their first win since defeating Knoxville 46-36 on December 3, 2016.

The Indians were 2-20 during the 2016-17 season and were 0-22 during the 2017-18 campaign.

In the scoring department for the Indians, Senior Marleigh Denburger lead the Indians with 12 points, with Freshman Macie Krier adding 10 points. Sophomore Kaylee Johnson had 8 points, and Senior Lindsey Holmberg had 7.

Defensively, Denburger had 9 total rebounds with seven of those on the defensive side. Johnson had eight rebounds, with six of those being defensive rebounds. Holmberg and Sophomore Amanda Fay each had four rebounds for the Indians.

The Big Reds were lead by sophomore Claire Mathews who had 23 points on the night, with junior Taylor Shinn adding 14 more.

Sophomore McKinley McClure lead her team on the boards with seven total rebounds while scoring 10 points.

The Indians remain at home when they take on Fairfield at home on November 27th, 2018. Tip-off time is 6:15 pm.
