Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Indians Girls Varsity Team is still searching for their first win in almost two years, as they fell 60-39.

Oskaloosa Head Coach Jacie White spoke with Oskaloosa News’s Jamie Brockman after the game.

The Indians lead the Trojans in the first quarter 10-4, and the defense was the key to that success. White said that the second half, that defense began to falter “mentally due to some fatigue. Any time you can hold a team to 4 points in a quarter that’s a solid defense.”

The Indians handled the press better than their first outing. “We’ve been working press-break constantly,” added White. “We are seeing the floor so much better this year in a press-break than we did last year.”

“A lot of good things happening,” added White of her team’s improvements this season.

On the defense side, Amanda Fay has been making her presence known. “I love the combination of Jillian Jennings and Amanda Fay. Those two work so well together.”

“I just thought our bench did a phenomenal job,” said White.

“When you have a losing streak like this, it’s got to be hard to stay motivated, but yet they come out here, and they give it all,” Brockman stated to White of the visible improvements the team is making.

White points towards the last game of the season last year, when the Indians were up over Knoxville. “That was the point where it really dug in.”

“I think that’s the point where their confidence turned from just saying it, to actually believing it,” added White of the team’s belief they can win games. “I think we saw that tonight where they actually believed in this game.”

Having that mental toughness to dig in when things are going right is something the team has been gaining on, White says. “I think we can surprise some people this season.”

The Indians lead the Fairfield Trojans 10-4 after the first quarter, but the Trojans went on a 23-3 run in the second quarter to have a 27-13 lead going into the break.

Fairfield didn’t let off the gas in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Indians 23-11. The fourth quarter, Oskaloosa outscored Fairfield 15-10, with the final score of 60-39.

Kaylee Johnson (So) lead the Indians offense with 8 points, while Jullian Jennings (So) had 7 points. Lindsey Holmberg (Sr) added 6 points while Macie Krier (Fr) added 5.

Rebounding for the Indians was improved, and sophomore Amanda Fay pulled down ten total rebounds, while Jullian Jennings added 7 more. Macie Krier and Kaylee Johnson each had 6 rebounds.

The Indians will travel to Grinnell on Friday to take on the #4 ranked Tigers.
