Oskaloosa, Iowa – During a public question and answer session hosted by William Penn University and the Oskaloosa School District at Smokey Row in Oskaloosa.

The hour-and-a-half long session featured every coach of a fall sport from both institutions.

Oskaloosa Head Volleyball Coach Jennifer Comfort spoke to the crowd about her team’s outlook for 2017 and building upon their success last year.

Comfort said that 28 girls are out for the team this year, which includes seven seniors.

Two starters from last year’s team help make up this year’s squad.

Comfort said that building trust in the team so that they can trust themselves and each other and the coaching staff will build a more cohesive team.

The team has put in over 40 hours of practice the past two weeks, “and we’ll need every minute of it to get better before the season starts”, says Comfort.

Moderator Wade Steinlage asked Comfort how this year’s team gets to the same level as last year’s team. Last year the team made it to the final round to determine state qualifiers, but came up short. “We’ve made it to that game the last 3 out of 5 years that I’ve coached. The goal is to get to that game.”

“With this team, what I’m really going to emphasize is continual improvement,” said Comfort. “We will get there; it will take a lot of work.”

“I’m looking forward to the new faces emerging. A lot of these girls have played multiple sports behind the grade that just graduated, and it’s going to be the community’s first opportunity to see these girls,” added Comfort.

The Indians Volleyball Team opens up their season on Tuesday evening in a triangular with Carlisle and Colfax-Mingo beginning at 5:30 pm.

They play again on Thursday evening at 7 pm against Bondurant-Farrar.
