Oskaloosa, Iowa – Labor Day is quickly approaching and with it marks the end of the summer season for many families and businesses. With the end of summer comes the start of the school year.

Oskaloosa Community Schools held a registration day this past week to help finalize as many student registrations as possible.

The majority of registrations are handled online through the district’s website. About 25% of students and their families still utilize the traditional route for various reasons, such as no internet access or recently moving to the area, so the day long registration process is still necessary.

There is an occasional student that arrives on the first day of school and hasn’t registered. At times this can be tricky when the parent then leaves the child there without any prior registration.

Oskaloosa Elementary School Principal Mike Dursky said that the district continues to move towards a paperless environment, “for a lot of things.”

At the elementary school this year the landscaping has been freshened up outside, including replacing some concrete in places. Inside the building, the tile floors have been stripped and refinished, while the office area has gotten new carpet.

Internet capability was made more robust for students in the building, as more of them utilize laptops for daily learning.

This year will see the elementary implement their new math series, while they are working on their 4th year of the reading series.

In the high school cafeteria on registration day, the Oskaloosa Spirit Store was also present, along with representatives from Mahaska Health Partnership and  organizations that included The Oskaloosa Indian Booster Club, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

School starts for Oskaloosa on August 23rd, and the first three days will be an hour early out.
