Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa School Board met on Tuesday night, where they went through a fairly typical agenda.

In the superintendent’s report, Superintendent Paula Wright spoke about her effort to tell the district’s story on social media, in an effort to help parents and community members become more aware of the things taking place in the district.

The board approved the hiring of Amy Bidwell as Director of Student Services. Also approved was the hiring of Eric Coop as a 3/4 time high school English teacher.

The board then approved the bid for 55 computers for the middle and high schools for Project Lead the Way. The current computers are eight years old.

The new computers are all-in-ones and will be completely contained on the desk for students.

A bid was received in the amount of $73,810.00 from SHI, with the money coming from sales tax funds. The board approved the purchase.

The board approved the first reading of board policies for the district, with a few changes being implemented, such as wording. The word technology replaced the word computer in portions of the policy.

Also discussed was the Home School Assistance Program which has grown over the past year.

It was believed that the program would run a deficit, which at the start of 2018-19 is a deficit of $123,642. “It is important for the board to grow the program with a clear plan for bringing the program to a place where it is financially self-sustaining, supportive of the homeschool families, and compliant with the Department of Educations rules,” said Wright in her board packet.

As the program continues to grow, additional staff will need to be added to meet the Department of Education rules that require a 40:1 ratio of students to a teacher. The district is expecting 76 HSAP students for the 2018-19 school year.

The budget is expected to be $300 per student for materials and activities for the program.

The board approved the waiver letter, budget, and HSAP program for the 2018-19 school year.

The board appointed Carl Drost, Craig Vanhulzen, and Erik Edgren to the facilities planning committee.

The board then discussed and appointed staff to be Level 1 investigators, to investigate allegations of abuse of students by school district employees.

Level 2 investigators was assigned to the Oskaloosa Police Department.
