Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa School Board met in regular session on Tuesday night.

The board held their election of officers for the next school year. Shelly Herr was nominated as Oskaloosa School Board President, and the board approved her nomination and was approved unanimously by the board.

The board discussed briefly the ongoing back and forth discussion taking place between the City of Oskaloosa and the Oskaloosa School District over the planned early childhood development center and YMCA.

Oskaloosa School Superintendent Paula Wright said that latest changes were recently sent to her by the districts legal adviser, and she would be forwarding on those changes to the City of Oskaloosa. “Our intention is to keep moving this forward,” added Wright.

Sharma Parlett was selected as vice-president of the board for the upcoming year.

Both Herr and Parlett are continuing in their respective roles from the previous year.

During the past year, the board has met on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, and if a second meeting was needed, the fourth Tuesday of the month. The board decided that they would keep their meetings as it has been in the past year.

The board set their committees, including adding an ad-hoc security committee, that will include three members from the board.

The board passed a final reading of updated policies for Staff Technology Acceptable Use and Social Networking Policy, Student Records Access, Student Directory Information, Student Photographs, and Student Library Circulation Records.

The Board is waiting for a bid(s) for improvements to the stadium, which includes sod installation, irrigation installation, and track resurfacing. The bids are due by the end of the week.

The Board also received notes from the Facilities Planning Committee and the review of Superintendent Wrights 5-year Facilities Improvement plan which included notes on the old stadium and the project drainage.

“The committee met with city officials and Bob Nelson about past flooding issues at the stadium. The new pipe which bisects the field is greater in diameter than needed but apparently, the problem stemmed from a clogged drain above the stadium. The committee asked for a retention pond/area be explored to prevent future heavy rain events from damaging new expected improvements to the track and field. Drawings have been sent of the proposed retention pond.

Track & Field – Discussed whether it would be more cost effective to build a new track and field, but the consensus was that it is cheaper to improve the existing facility. Because of that, bids or proposal of bidding for improving the field (tile, irrigation, and sod) will be presented at the board meeting to keep the project moving forward. The reason this is necessary is band and middle school football have been displaced this year and will need to use the field next year along with middle & high school using the track in the spring of 2020.
