Oskaloosa PD Participates In Outdoor Active Shooter Training

4 members of the Oskaloosa Police Department took part in the active shooter training this past week.

Lake Red Rock – Training to save lives has first responders learning and renewing skills. One of those skills is how to work together during an active shooter situation.

Four members of the Oskaloosa Police Department took part in the three-day course held at Elk Rock State Park near Lake Red Rock. Thirty-one officers in total attended the training.

Lee Lawrence with ALERT [Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center] lead the three days spent equipping area law enforcement officers with knowledge to help protect not only themselves, but also others during an active shooter situation.

“The training focused a lot on outdoor rapid response”, said Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt, “We train a lot on the range, but this is more of the real-life simunition training side of things.”

Simunition involves a small wax bullet that is fired from a modified gun, which enables bad guys and police officers to exchange fire in a mostly-safe fashion.

The outdoor training helps officers experience adverse weather conditions, much like the rain that soaked participants on the first day of training. “You have to train in real life situations, and this is about as close as you can get to that,” said Sandholdt.

Lawrence is retired from law enforcement, but says providing this type of training to other law enforcement has become nearly a full-time job.

Lawrence said that the local officers who participated in the training were “outstanding”.

Lawrence said the main goal of the training is to save lives. “Officers lives. Civilians lives.”
