Oskaloosa Cross Country at Knoxville

Oskaloosa Indians

Oskaloosa ran at the Knoxville Invitational on Tuesday night with the Oskaloosa girls finishing 5th in the 13 team field.  Brooke VanHouweling led the way with a 10th place finish, covering the 4k distance in 17:16.  Kelsey Roquet and Stephanie Smith also ran strong races for the Indians with Riley Berg and Meghan Toubekis rounding out the Indian top 5.

“We ran on a tougher course tonight and yet our times were not to bad.  The girls allowed the hills to get into their heads a little and they probably didn’t attack the course as well as they should have. I think we are better than we ran tonight, yet we did some good things.  Our spread between our 2nd and 5th runner was less than a minute, so we are running as more of a pack.  We just need to make a few adjustments to get ourselves ready for the conference meet in a couple of meets.  I think this is a very talented group of girls.”
On the boys side, Max Holle led the Indians to a 10th place finish in the 12-team field with his 31st place finish running a time of 19:25 for the 5k distance.  Alex Hyland had another strong performance finishing in 19:52 to garner 41st place.  Adam Genskow, Caden Smith and Bryan Herr rounded out the scorers for the team.  “We continue to make little improvements on a weekly basis.  Six of our seven varsity boys set season-best times tonight on a difficult course.  They have been working hard and it is good to see their efforts pay off with improved times.  I’m looking forward to seeing how much more we can improve in the last couple of weeks.”
Both the girls and boys JV teams had some good performances as well.  The girls jv team finished 4th, while the boys team did not have enough runners for a team score.  Angela Hyland led the girls with a 23rd place finish, while Emory White was the top JV boy running a season-best time.  “We have some competition going on for the final two varsity spots and Angela and Natalie Whitis have been battling for those spots and it was good to see them both run better tonight.  Competition is always good for a runner.”
In the middle school races, the boys team had 4 boys finish in the top 10 to finish 2nd in the team race to Indianola by 2 points.  Skylar DeJong was the individual champion winning his 4th race by a wide margin running a time of 10:02 over the 3k course.  Gerrit VanMaanen, Jared Boggess and Jared Buckallew also had top 10 finishes with Brady DeJong the 5th scorer in 22nd place.  “This is a very good boys team who will contribute to the high school program in the coming years.  Skylar is a very tough runner and I look for great thing from him and the other boys on this team.”  Rachel Adams led the girls team with an 18th place finish in a time of 13:44.  Payton VanWaardhuizen, Alex Koenig, Brieyanna Hill and Haley Bunnel rounded out the scorers for the Indians.  “The girls ran really well.  This was the longest race in terms of distance so far this season for the middle schoolers and I thought they did quite well.”
The Indians will be in action at the Big Red Invitational in Centerville next Tuesday.
