Oskaloosa Claims First Season Win On The Road
Nate Van Veldhuizen finds his way back to the end-zone for Oskaloosa on Friday night as he helped lead the Indians to their first win of the season over Saydel 44-30
Oskaloosa, Iowa – There was a collective sigh of relief Friday night as the Oskaloosa Indians football team lost that proverbial monkey off their back. The Indians played spoiler to the Saydel Eagles on their homecoming night with a final score of 44-30.
Oskaloosa Head Coach Mike Sterner talked about the team effort shortly after the last whistle blew Friday night.
“That was a great win,” said Sterner. “It was a telling tale, our kids had to fight back.” Sterner was referencing the 3rd quarter when Oskaloosa was down by 1 to the Eagles, but the Indians then quickly rattled off 21 unanswered points.
Sterner described Saydels team as “up and coming” with “some very talented ballplayers”.
“Every big play they had in the first half was a mistake on our part,” said Sterner. Sterner said that being disciplined and sound in their play is important and something they as a team can control. The Eagles took advantage of those mistakes by the Indians with the short passing game. “We did not cover it well at all,” said Sterner of the short passing game.”
“Our offense is starting to click now,” Sterner added.
The Indians are heading into Homecoming week against the Chariton Chargers. I asked Sterner if this was a moral booster heading into the big week. “It’s just the next game for us.” As Sterner has stressed, since becoming coach, that, “The most important game is the next one,” as he tries to downplay the anxiety that comes with a special week to the players and fans.
After a tough start to the season, some players experienced new positions on the field for Saydel. “We’re looking for kids that will fit the right spot,” explained Sterner. “We’re looking for ways to make our team successful, and what we were doing wasn’t successful.”
Oskaloosa will take on Chariton at home this Friday evening. It’s the Indians Homecoming week, with kick-off set for 7:30 pm at the Lacey Stadium.
