Grinnell, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Indians took on the Grinnell Tigers on Friday night in Grinnell. The Tigers had the look of an improved team over last season.

The Indians came out with a 9-0 lead on the Tigers, but Oskaloosa’s Xavier Foster had gotten called for 2 fouls by that point, and he was sent to the bench to await the 2nd half of play.

Oskaloosa News sports announcer Jamie Brockman spoke with Oskaloosa Head Coach Ryan Parker about the team’s performance on the night, as the Indians rolled to a 60-47 win.

The Indians came out with a spark on Friday night, and Parker said that the team was humbled some on Tuesday night. “Things aren’t always going to be easy, and the target’s on our back, and everything’s going to be tough. We’re going to get everybody’s best shot.”

“I’m proud of our guys. We played really well in the first half without Xavier, which shows our guys we can play without somebody if we get in foul trouble,” added Parker. “Our defense is really good right now which is something we work on every day in practice, and it hasn’t looked that good in practice. So that’s where I’ve been losing sleep.”

“Iszak Schultz on defense. I don’t think he gets enough credit for it,” added Parker. “He’s really good defensively.”

Parker said he spoke with his team after the final horn. One of those was “putting teams away when you have the chance, instead of going highlight reel and trying to get dunks and ooh’s and ahh’s and stuff like that.”

The other thing Parker said he spoke about was having every guy “step up every single night. And we showed that.”

When Foster returned to the game, he ran up 15 quick points. “He was frustrated, and he took it out on the rim,” said Parker.

Cole Henry lead the Indians on offense with 19 points. Xavier Foster had 15 points, and Noah Van Veldhuizen had 9 points.

Henry lead the team with 13 total rebounds and 2 blocked shots, while Foster added 10 more total rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Tyler Miller had 6 rebounds.

The Indians travel to Centerville on Tuesday night, with a 7:45 tip-off time. We will carry that game live on Oskaloosa News with Jamie Brockman calling all the action.
