Ottumwa, Iowa – On Friday afternoon, at approximately 1:42 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department received a call reporting shots fired in the 800 block of South Lillian Street on the south side of Ottumwa.

That call revealed that one subject had been shot. As officers were responding to the area of the shooting, they were advised that three male subjects involved in the shooting were fleeing the area on foot and were reported to be running westbound in a creek.

Officers then responded to Liberty Elementary School where they confronted three male subjects.

Officers then came under fire at approximately 1:49 pm and returned fire, killing one of the suspects. Two other suspects were located in a field area behind Liberty Elementary School. Both suspects were transported for medical attention.

Another suspect potentially unrelated to the case was reported to have been taken into custody.

The manhunt for the missing suspect took several hours and involved agencies from all around southern and central Iowa. Those officers also came from the Oskaloosa Police Department and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will conduct the remainder of the investigation due to it being an officer-involved shooting.

KTVO television is reporting that the incident started as a result of a home invasion gone wrong.
