One Person Killed In Ottumwa After Shots Fired

An Ottumwa Police Department Press Release

On the evening of Thursday, August 23, 2018, at 9:50 pm, the Ottumwa Police Department received a call of shots being fired at a residence located at 137 North Ward Street in Ottumwa. The caller advised that one person had been shot and a suspect had fled the scene in a vehicle. Responding officers located a male subject at that address suffering from a gunshot wound. The subject was transported to Ottumwa Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

At approximately 10:41 pm officers located the vehicle operated by the suspect at a residence located at 311 North Birch Street in Ottumwa. At approximately 12:07 am, August 24, 2018, officers arrested Jacob Haze Heckethorn, age 18, of 311 North Birch Street, Ottumwa with First Degree Murder and Attempted Murder. Heckethorn is being held in the Wapello County Jail with no bond.

The name of the deceased is being held pending notification of family.
