Norma Jean Fortney

, 89, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, August 27, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born on August 21, 1921, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Forrest and Gladys Leanhart Hargrave. She graduated from the Lacey High School. Following High School she was united in marriage to Wes Hebron, they later divorced. On March 21, 1950, she was united in marriage to Robert Fortney at Oskaloosa. He died December 13, 2003. Norma stayed home to take care of her home and family for many years. Later in life she went to work as the site coordinator for Mahaska County Agency on Aging, in this capacity she oversaw the operation of the Oskaloosa Senior Center, meals on wheels and transportation services; she served in this capacity until her retirement in the early 1990’s. She enjoyed collecting antique chairs, Thursday night band concerts in the park, spending time with family and friends, and meeting new people. She delighted in going for rides in her convertible.

Norma is survived by her three sons: Larry Hebron of Corvallis, Oregon, Mike (& Tammie) Fortney of Oskaloosa and Craig Fortney of Moorehead, Minnesota; a son in law: Jerry Moeller of Hillsboro, Oregon; 10 grandchildren; several great and great great grandchildren; and a sister Alwilda Talley of Louisville, Kentucky.

In addition to her husband Robert, she was preceded in death by her two daughters: Aloni Joy Hebron and Janii Moeller, her parents and her step parents.

Funeral services for Norma Fortney will be held Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend John Allard officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 10 a.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Tuesday evening from 5—7 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
