What Cheer. Mona Lundy, 78, of What Cheer, died Saturday, October 30, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born on February 1, 1932, in Keokuk County the daughter of Hubert and Opal White Hollingsworth. She graduated from the Sigourney High School with the class of 1949. Following high school she had several bookkeeping and accounting jobs. On February 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to Richard Robert “Bob” Lundy in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1963 they moved to San Bernardino, California, Mona did bookkeeping and accounting work for various places in California. Even though she was a farm girl she loved the time they spent in California. In 1972 the family moved back to Iowa and they purchased each of their parents’ family farms. Mona did all of the bookkeeping for the farm operation and for Bob’s excavating business. Mona’s attention to detail and bookkeeping did not end with her work, she kept track of everything literally everything in her home, she was a true numbers person. Later in life when Bob fell ill she focused her time and attention on caring for him until his death on July 19, 2004. Mona enjoyed traveling with her family; a highlight travel for her was taking a trip with her sister to Hawaii, together dreamed of that trip for many years. Mona loved to be on the go, she loved being in the out of doors on her farm caring for her animals, she loved having pets around. She enjoyed a good cup of coffee while she listened to KBOE in the morning. She also enjoyed watching the Wheel of Fortune in the evenings and doing crossword puzzles. She always looked forward to Tuesdays and Sundays, that was Bingo day and she would never miss, she even enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino to play Bingo and the “one armed bandits”. Some of her other interests included: fishing, listening to country music and going to the What Cheer Opera House. Mona delighted in spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Farm Bureau. She will be remembered as a strong woman with a kind smile.

Her family includes her two daughters: Twyla (& Doug) Herold of Chatfield, Minnesota, and Sonya Lundy of What Cheer; seven grandchildren: Amy VanSickel, Thiara Schmidt, Justin Herold, John Herold, Brandy Joynes, Lora Roberts, and Tasha Joynes; ten great grandchildren: Tyler VanSickel, Treyc VanSickel, Trinity Schmidt, Trenton Barnett, Zachary Sams, Seth Sams, Jaylyn Joynes, Breanna Uhler, Jayden Uhler, and Christian Roberts.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Ione Mireles.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery near Rose Hill. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5 –7 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Mona Lundy Memorial Fund for Cancer Research and the University of Iowa Hospital.
