Missed Opportunity, Indian girls lose to Newton 58-42
by Doug DeKock
Newton, Iowa – When you are 0-10 in conference play there are not many legitimate chances to pick up wins. Tuesday night in Newton was a chance and the Indians could not capitalize losing 58-42. Oskaloosa had been playing well the 2 previous games against highly ranked opponents but was pretty much out of this one after a 4 point 2nd quarter. Oskaloosa was able to keep it somewhat close behind Alexis Westercamp in the 1st quarter only trailing by 3 points 13-10. In the 2nd quarter the offense would sputter badly not because of the usual turnovers, just missed shots. Newton extended their lead to 9, 23-14 at the half. The 3rd period saw the Indian defense completely collapse giving up 20 point in the quarter. Newton was able to put the game away by the end of the 3rd quarter leading by 20, 43-23. Newton’s crisp passing was able to dissect the Indians as they tried to apply a full court press and a trapping half-court defense. Oskaloosa did play a nice 4th quarter offensively scoring 19 points to Newton’s 15 points.
The Indians were le once again by Westercamp who scored a game high 25 points. Marleigh Denberger came on in the 2nd half after only scoring 2 points in the 1st half and finished with 12 points. Katelyn Smith had 3 points and Lindsey Holmberg chipped in 2 points. Oskaloosa falls to 0-11 in Little Hawkeye Conference play and 2-15 overall. Newton improves to 3-8 in the conference and 6-12 overall. Oskaloosa will have 2 more winnable games this week at home with Norwalk visiting on Friday and Albia in town on Saturday.
