Mildred Marie Horn, 82, of Newburg and formerly of Chariton and Oskaloosa, died Friday, December 22, 2023, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. She was born November 6, 1941, in Mahaska County, Iowa, the daughter of Walter Richard and Dorthy Craig Mitchel.
She attended school in Oskaloosa.
She was united in marriage to Carl Edward Hamilton to this union four children were born, Pamela, Mary, Carl, and Paula. Marie and Carl later divorced.
On February 14, 1970, she was united in marriage to Richard LeRoy Horn in Oskaloosa. To this union two children were born, Richard, Jr. and Brian.
Marie worked as a C.N.A. and caregiver at numerous care facilities in and around Oskaloosa. She retired from health care in December of 2002.
She enjoyed cooking and camping. She was a fierce competitor when playing cards her favorite games being seventeen point Pitch and Fast Track.
Her family includes her children, Pamela (Tim) Green of Des Moines, Mary (Jerry) Sanders of Sigourney, Carl Hamilton of Lacona, Iowa, Paula Chamberlin of Beacon, and Brian (Sonya) Horn of Newburg, Iowa, 21 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; sisters in law, Judy Mitchel, Velma Witt, Shirley VanDee, and Linda Horn; a brother in law, Randy Horn; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard on October 15, 2005; her parents; a son, Richard LeRoy Horn, Jr.; a granddaughter, Melisa James; a grandson, T.J. Green; and two brothers, Richard Mitchel and Lester Mitchel.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Matt Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Union Mills Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. The family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Tuesday evening from 5-7 to greet friends and relatives.
