Michael Robert Hargrave, 69, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, July 28, 2019, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born July 11, 1950, at Spencer, Iowa, the son of Virgil and Ruth Drexler Hargrave.

Mike graduated from high school in Clarkfield, Minnesota in 1968. Following high school, he completed two years of college at Southwest Minnesota. He attended Barber College in Cedar Rapids, completing that schooling in 1971.

Mike moved to Oskaloosa in 1972 and worked as a barber at Don Carr’s Barber Shop. Mike purchased the business from Don and owned and operated Mike’s Barber Shop and later Z Barber Shop for nearly 40 years. He retired in 2014.

On October 6, 1973, Mike was united in marriage to Diane Roberts in Oskaloosa. To this union two sons were born, Dustin and Vince. Mike and Diane later divorced. On September 3, 1999, Mike was united in marriage to Sheryl (Applegate) Sears at Knoxville. Sheryl died on February 26, 2012.

Mike was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa where he was active with the Knights of Columbus, he also belonged to the Eagles and had been a part of the Jaycees in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed playing softball, fishing, and playing cards, especially Pitch.

His family includes his two sons and their wives, Dustin and Stacie Hargrave of Oskaloosa and Vince and Haley Hargrave of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Jacob Hargrave, Bethany Hargrave, Dax Hargrave; two brothers, Richard (Rosie) Hargrave of South Carolina, and Doug Hargrave of Marion and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Sheryl, Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents; a brother, Leonard Hargrave; and a sister, Roxanne Hargrave.

As was Mike’s wish his body has been cremated.
Services are pending at the Bates Funeral Chapel.
