Mayo D. Grubb, 88, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, April 24, 2015 at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. Mayo was born Saturday, June 12, 1926 in Mahaska County, the son of Claude E. and Zena Beeman Grubb.

Mayo graduated from Barnes City High School with the class of 1943. Following graduation, Mayo attended Central College for a time before joining the Army Air Corp shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

On June 11, 1950, Mayo was united in marriage to Eunice Ahrens in Fremont and she died April 17, 2006.

Mayo worked as a carpenter and owned and operated Mayo Grubb Construction in Oskaloosa for 30 years. He retired in 1988.

He enjoyed gardening, camping, traveling to Arizona with Eunice for 18 winters and loved keeping in touch with his granddaughters and great grandchildren.

Mayo was a member of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W., Elks, Eagles and the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa.

Two of Mayo’s greatest loves in life were the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeye Athletics, he was able to be at the 2006 World Series game to see the Cardinals win the championship.

Mayo is survived by: a son, Leslie (& Kerri Moore) Grubb of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Nancy (& Dave) Sorrell of Washington, Iowa; two granddaughters, Angie (& Darren) Shain and Carly (& Casey) Estes; 6 great grandchildren: Andy, Jake, Makena, Camille, Cayden and Cassandra; two sisters: Harriett (& James) Piersel of Loveland, Colorado and Mildred Borts of Mingo, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; three brothers and their wives: John (& Dorothy) Grubb, Clifford (& Etta) Grubb and Dean (& Twila) Grubb; and a brother-in-law, Forest Borts.

As was his wish, Mayo’s body has been cremated.
Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Visitation will be held in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 after 1 P.M. and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Tuesday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa American Legion Post 34 or to Mahaska County Hospice.
