Max Welch

Oskaloosa. Max Welch, 87, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at the Mahaska Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born on May 11, 1923, at Oskaloosa the son of Eugene and Lily Mae DeWitt Welch. He served during WWII in Germany and was a prisoner of war and received a Purple Heart. He was released from captivity by a German soldier and left for his troops to find. Following his discharge he returned to Oskaloosa. He worked for many years as a heating and air conditioning technician for Delbert Brackney. He retired from there in the late 1980’s. In retirement he went to work for the Schuster family taking care of local care facilities as their maintenance man, he retired from there in the mid 2000’s. Max was a skilled repairman, he was always willing to lend a helping hand when called upon. In 2001 Max was awarded his high school diploma by Congressman Leonard Boswell, as part of Congressman Boswell’s tour, honoring vets with diplomas. He enjoyed graduation day with his grandson Jake in 2001. He enjoyed working, especially on his rental properties. He also enjoyed going to the car races and the harness races. He was a member of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W., the Eagles, and the D.A.V. Sunday dinners were always a highlight for the Welch family, Max looked forward to his family coming over every week to share a meal and spend time together.

His family includes his wife of over 68 years, Mary Welch of Oskaloosa; three children and their spouses: Kathy and Clarence Grubb, Kim and Mike Roozeboom, and Ted and Connie Welch all of Oskaloosa; nine grandchildren: Kelly (& Charles Fisher) Iseton, Gordon (& Paula) Grubb, Kari (& Joe) Flaherty, Kandis (& Matt) Sherlock, Nick Welch, Jake (& Casey) Welch, Sarah Hynick, and Matt Hynick; 9 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; two brothers: Jack (& Beulah) Welch and Rex Welch all of Oskaloosa; and 2 sisters: Peggy Husband of Oskaloosa and Vera Mealy of Butte, Montana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Jim Welsh and Bill Welch; and six half siblings.

A memorial service with military rites will be held Monday, October 4, 2010, at 5 p.m. at the Oskaloosa American Legion in Oskaloosa. As was Max’s wish his body has been cremated and no visitation is planned. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Military Rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion, V.F.W. and D.A.V.
