Max Riley, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, August 18, 2013, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
Max was born September 27, 1932, at Moulton, Iowa, the son of Chet and June Evans Brinegar. At an early age, Max’s mother died and he was adopted by his aunt and uncle Cleve and Art Riley. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1951. On November 5, 1955, he was united in marriage to Agnes Tish, to this union four children were born, Teresa, Diana, Patrick and Mark. They later divorced. On March 15, 1980, he was united in marriage to Louise Glassford, and she died October 12, 2006.
Early on Max purchased a farm near Delta, where he farmed throughout his working life. He also worked in town at Clay Products in What Cheer and Keota Key Wash. He worked for 30 years at PAMCO in Oskaloosa, retiring from there in 1995. In retirement he worked for the Oskaloosa Herald.
Max enjoyed playing dart ball and bowling. He was an active member of the Eagles in Oskaloosa where he held several offices over the years.
His family includes his three children, Teresa Ehret of Newton, Diana (& Randy) Sherman of Oskaloosa and Patrick Riley of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren, Cory Blommers, Michelle (& Shawn) Van Gorp, Crystal Sherman, Candi Sherman, Jesse Riley and Christopher Riley; nine great grandchildren; and an niece Glenda York of Ozark, Missouri.
In addition to his wife Louise, he was preceded in death by his parents; adoptive parents; a son in infancy, Mark Riley; and a brother Charles Brinegar.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 23, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in the Leando Cemetery at Leando, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House or Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
