Mathew Wyngarden, 38, of rural Fremont, died Sunday, December 9, 2018. He was born October 9, 1980, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of John and Vicky Batterson Wyngarden.
Growing up in rural Mahaska County he had a lifelong love of livestock and wildlife. He was always active in 4-H and F.F.A. His high school job was working at Summit Crest Farms where he fit right in as he had been showing livestock since he was five.
Mat graduated from Eddyville Blakesburg High School with the class of 1999. Following high school, he worked at Clow Valve in Oskaloosa and attended college.
On September 24, 2011, he was united in marriage to Jamie Vander Leest at Honey Creek Resort at Lake Rathbun.
Mat completed a five-year apprenticeship program with the Local 33 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. Upon completing his apprenticeship, he worked as a union plumber and steamfitter for Winger Mechanical in Ottumwa.
Mat loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and Ice fishing. The only thing that made enjoying the outdoors better for Mat is when his two boys would join him. He loved sharing his love of hunting, fishing, and raising livestock with his boys. He was a member of the Local 33 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and always looked forward to playing cards with his friends.
His family includes his two sons, Blake Wyngarden and Brody Wyngarden at home; his parents, John and Vicky Wyngarden of rural Fremont; his wife, Jamie Wyngarden; a sister, Melissa (& Mark) Neff of Fremont; a brother, Mark Wyngarden of Dubuque; a niece, Ashley Neff; a nephew, Zac Neff; his mother and father in law, Sheila and Brent Vander Leest of Sully; a brother in law, Tyler Vander Leest of Logan, Iowa; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter & Olive Batterson and Elmer & Nellie Wyngarden.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in the Fremont United Methodist Church in Fremont with Pastor Mike Sinnett officiating.
Burial will be in the Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery south of Fremont. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Friday morning after 10 a.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives.
