Mason Mitchell Becomes Second Iowa Driver to Win at Iowa Speedway
Chip Ganassi Racing post 1-2 sweeps in both practices for tomorrow’s Iowa Corn 300
NEWTON, Iowa (July 17, 2015) – West Des Moines native, Mason Mitchell, won his second career ARCA Series race and it couldn’t have come at a better place. Mitchell passed Kyle Weatherman in a one-lap overtime sprint to win the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards #ThisIsMySpeedway150 at his home track. This was Mitchell’s first victory of 2015 and the second of his ARCA career.
“I have been looking forward to this race since last year,” Mitchell said. “Iowa Speedway is the one track I wanted to win at more than any other on the ARCA schedule. This is the biggest win of my career, even bigger than winning the championship last year.”
Minutes earlier in a two-lap green-white-checker attempt at The Fastest Short Track on the Planet, Weatherman got a jump on the outside and appeared to be headed to victory until another caution forced the final one-lap shootout.
Weatherman, turned heads in a major-league way, as a rookie at Iowa Speedway in 2013. He finished second in the 150-lap ARCA race and nearly won it after leading 20 laps.
Mitchell is just the second driver from Iowa to race his way to Casey’s General Stores Victory Lane at Iowa Speedway. Grimes native Brett Moffitt won a NASCAR K&N Series race in 2011.
Next up, Iowa Speedway will host the Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300 on Saturday, July 18 at 7:50 p.m. CDT.
